Are chipped ps1 supposed to load games slower?
I have the old gray box ps1. It has a stealth mod chip in it I believe. It seems like when I'm playing a burned disc, things load much slower than normal, and that's saying a lot of this old beast.
Most games play fine, but some parts are extremely slow to load. Like there are blank black screens a lot of the time, before the actual 'loading' screens.
On Breath of Fire IV, whenever I get into a battle it takes like 10 mins before it actually starts. The music is still playing and the background is still there, it just takes FOREVER.
I'm wondering if that is normal for a modded ps1?
thanks

No, it's not.
Do original games run fine? How many different brands have you tried so far for your backups?
It could very well be that you need to adjust the setting of your laser.
You can do it actually, but I would suggest patience, light touch, extra microscopic care, and lots of reading up on it first. Oh, and a multimeter of course. A magnifier of some kind is always a plus.
If you turn those damn knobs too much, then they'll just become too loose and it'll be a nightmare. So get it right quick enough.
I would advise, obviously, that you test different CD-R brands and a few retail games first.

I never had any loading problems with my old ps. I had the chip in the back and had to use a spring and a loading disc but never had any trouble with the burnt copies.

Depending on time of production, model, and even unit, the laser wil deteriorate in different ways, sometimes almost never, sometimes dodgy a few weeks out of the factory.
In any case, I found this, it's rather well explained.

If you're on a diff. model, it's just a matter of finding the corresponding control points. Also, the values on there might change some but the general idea is there.

Thanks for the help. I'll give it a try.
