So after seeing numerous users asking "How to play/convert .mkv files"
on their PS3s, how to do it, and what ways there is to accomplish this task, I decided to create a thread that covers pretty much everything.
Can't I just use something like PS3mediaserver?
Yes you could, but.... there could be many reasons why you wouldn't want to do this, such as:
- Your computer is too slow to decode HD files
- You don't want to always keep your computer on
- You don't want to put a load on your computer
- You want to be able to Fast foward and rewind smoothly and be able to transfer to usb or internal hdd.
Can't I just watch the .mkv file in Showtime?
Yes you can but if you're like me and you're a movie fanatic, then you most likely have a home threatre system, and as of 24/08/11 Showtime downmixes 5.1 to 2.0 stereo.
Btw I've spoken to Andreas Íman (The creator of Showtime
) in his forums, he said he's working on getting Showtime
to passthrough audio, instead of downmixing.
Latest build of showtime outputs 5.1 now.
Lets get started......
You're going to want to get to know your files, so download this little app called 'Mediainfo' it's a really handy and a noob friendly application.
When this application has installed you can now right click on any video file and click media info, this will tell you about the file.
Once you click 'MediaInfo'
a box will pop up, showing you the specifications of that specific video file.
The above image shows that the file has AC3 audio which most TV shows will have.
If your file has anything else skip to step 4.
Since this file has AC3 audio, nothing needs to be changed, compressed or converted,
the file just needs to be 'Remuxed'
which can be done in less than a few minutes.
Download another program called 'Tsmuxer
Once this app has been downloaded and installed, open it up, and simply drag your desired video file into it.
Then it will look like this.
Look at where it says change level, if this level is over 4.1 (Which is unlikely) tick the change level box (if you have 4.1 or lower, skip this step) and simply change the level to 4.1
This should ensure that the video plays correctly.
Select 'MT2S muxing'
under output, click browse and select where you want the remuxed file to be.
Then click remux!
Once it finishes, you will have a PS3 compatible video file that can be played via USB, or streamed via a media server like Tversity
What if the audio file has DTS, AAC or any other type of audio?
Then the audio will need to be converted (Unless the video file has a resolution of 1280*720, 1920*1080, 1440*1080, 720*480 or 720*576 and has DTS audio, if this is the case then simply remux to AVCHD under output options in Tsmuxer put the BDMV and CERTIFICATE folder into a new folder called AVCHD, download an app called AVCHDMe open it up, click browse, select the AVCHD folder and it will do some checks and ask you to 'fix it', click this, should take about 2 secs and you're done, you can now just put the file on an usb and start it up from your PS3)
(Files can be split if they're over 4GB under 'split and cut
' in Tsmuxer.)
4.) How to convert audio to AC3?
Download another app called Xvid4PSP
Once downloaded and installed open up Xvid4PSP
, and set your options the same as mine (as pictured below).
Click open, select your video file and click OK
Xvid4PSP will now demux the audio from the source, once this is completed it will convert the audio which will take approx 8-15mins
, when this is completed, click ok
and exit out of Xvid4PSP.
Now open up Tsmuxer
, drag your video file in, remove the audio that is currently in there, and drag the new audio you created with Xvid4PSP, do step 3 (above) and you're finished.
Any questions, just comment in this thread and I'll get back to you asap.
