It never hurts to save up some space on that internal HDD - you can never have enough :D

So here it is, how to save up the maximum space on your int HDD!

I am NOT responsible for causing your game to crash or to become unplayable. You should ALWAYS have a second BACKUP in case you f*ck up something. Use at your own responsibility.

1)Delete the PS3_UPDATE folder

Spoiler:

All games have this folder(~250 MB),and if i delete all PS3_UPDATE in all games it'll save up a lot of space (especially if you got tons of games), and all games still work correctly.
HOW? In your downloaded game folder, you'll have something like this: BLUS06969/PS3_GAME and PS3_UPDATE. Delete the PS3 UPDATE.

If your game is on your int HDD already, open Multiman's filemanager (full left column), go to dev0_hdd/GAMES/GAME_NAME_ID/ and delete the PS3 UPDATE folder (circle or square?)

2)Remove the extra languages!

This is probably the biggest saver, removing a good number of gigs.
HOW? This is not exact science, it depends on each game. Usually EUR games have several languages (typically French, Spanish, and a few more). Our goal is to remove EVERYTHING related to those assuming we'll be playing the game in ENGLISH ONLY.

MY TIP: Have two copies of the game you want to rip. One remains intact as our backup, the second you can modify, test to make sure it isnt broken, then play/keep it.

Also, you can instead of deleting the files completly use dummy files. Simply open notepad, empty file, in Menu > Save As > Change "Save Type As" to "All files" > Write the file name. That would give you the dummy file you need

TOP TIP (Thanks to uptheirons1 for this!) Using aldo's ps3rip tool, the whole process of creating dummy files is automated!

ex: save a file called 'wondervid_spanish.bik' (it'll be like 0 kb as expected) and replace the actual BIG file with it, should work

Why do this? Some games dont load properly/crash if they miss a crucial file or dont install the game data.

Typically, cinematics/audio are found here:
GAME_NAME/USRDIR/...

Your job is to go file hunting, and after you done it a few times, you'll know what you're looking for. Usually they are .psarc files (big ones) and they are marked with "blah_blah_FR" or "french.psarc". Sometimes, you'll find whole folders named "french", and you got to delete them. Look out for folders called 'audio', 'speech', 'movies', 'cinematic', that's where they usually lie.

Also, the language files are the most obvious to spot. Usually in one folder, or as whole bunch of seperate files. But if you see "_INT" don't remove that one, because it's for the English language.

Example:You have 4 files: 'audio_barn_int', 'audio_barn_fr', 'audio_barn_es', 'audio_barn_de' then delete all 3 except the FIRST one.

Best way to explain is an example:

Under God of War III/PS3_GAME/USRDIR/PS3_CONTENT/VIDEODIR
Remove:
GERMAN.PSARC
SPANISH.PSARC
PORTUGUESE.PSARC
ITALIAN.PSARC
FRENCH.PSARC
DUTCH.PSARC
RUSSIAN.PSARC
POLISH.PSARC

Result? OVER 5.5gb saved!!

3)Remove 3D Movies/Bonus contents!

Same process as the step before, this time you hunt for CINEMATICS! Most games runs even when you delete the cinematics (if you dont care for the story), and those will save a great deal of space.

Example: GOW3/USRDIR/SOUNDS/STREAMS/CINEMATICS
Delete entire contents => save 500mb.

Remove all Bonus movies from USRDIR/CINEMATICS =>save 12gigs!!

4)Uninstall Home

Spoiler:

When you first used Home it asked you how much space you would like to reserve for the game data for Home. It should be 500mb~a few gigs. So uninstall Home to save space and it being useless on CFW. You can reinstall it later if you wish to
HOW?
To delete, just go to the Home icon and hit triangle. From there and select delete.

Got games you have finished? Games you no longer play? Well some games install data on your PS3, and it's eating up your int HDD space! If you want to play the game again, just run it, it'll reinstall/update (sacrifice a few mins of your time lol) but you'll definitely gain some major space.

5)Remove old games installed data

How? On the XMB, go to GAME > GAME DATA UTILITY > Choose game name > Triangle > DELETE!

6)Remove old games installed updates

How? On the XMB, go to GAME > GAME DATA UTILITY > Choose game name (it'll have DLC or update) > Triangle > DELETE!

7)Remove unwanted trophies ( small risk)

Small gain here, it's more of an annoyance than anything else. You gain ~1mb? per trophy folder delete. Blackotoo has made an awesome thread here. Check it out

8) Downsample .bik videos!!

Spoiler:

By downsampling movies you will re-encoding them to lower the file size, achieve a huge gain in backup size.

Will you lose video quality by downsampling? Yes.

Will you be able to see the difference in the quality loss? Probably NOT.

Althought you are lowering the video quality of the movie, you will
not see any major differences in playback (without taking screenshots
and zooming in on them, of course)...

HOW to Downsampling *.BIK Movie Files:

You'll need to download and install RAD Video Tools. It's free to download, get it here:

1) Run RAD Video Tools.

2) Press the BINK VIDEO icon on the lower left.

3) On the following screen, follow these steps:

-Browse to find the video you want to downsample, if you've been following this tutorial then you know where to find the video files (sometime even a bik directory). ONLY CHOOSE FILES LARGE FILES (>50MB AT LEAST). RE-ENCODING TAKES TIME AND SMALLER FILE SIZES DO NOT PROVIDE A BIG GAIN.

-Choose Compress to 40% this % percentage provides a good quality with a good gain on file sizes, and the quality loss was barely noticeable...
You can experiment yourself and set it to HIGHER % for SMALLER SIZES, or LOWER % for BETTER QUALITY.

-Click the BATCH icon on the right.


-Depending on your file size, the compression % choosen, the power/speed of your CPU+GPU, this WILL TAKE TIME. It's better to leave it at night when you're NOT using your PC to use ALL YOUR SYSTEM RESOURCES.

-Once you have re-encoded your new files you will need to RENAME them to remove "NEW_" from the beginning of the file name to REPLACE the old files with the ones you converted. Make sure you DID NOT REMOVE any movies accidentally.

-YOU'RE DONE! CELEBRATE YOUR NEW-FOUND AWESOMENESS BY SOME AWESOME PS3 GAMING !

9) Run PS3 Games with 4+GB Files from External HDD!!

Several games require to boot ONLY from internal HDD as they require 4+gb files, which do NOT fit on a standard FAT32 HDD (aka, your external HDD). However many of those games use a format called '.psarc' to compress large files (like zip or rar files on PC).
Luckily, those psarc can be decompressed into smaller files that do fit on your external HDD! Here's how (thanks to PS3NEWS for the guide!)

1) Download PSARC.zip PlayStation Archive Utility (or PARC GUI v0.2 update by TeamKidneyBean if you prefer) from here:

2) Extract zlib.net.dll and PSARC.exe to any folder.

3) Find any files more than 4Gb for example /PS3_GAME/USRDIR/build/main/pak22.psarc (5,596,444,529 bytes)

4) Copy pak22.psarc into zlib.net.dll and PSARC.exe directory.

5) Extract pak22.psarc (just drag-n-drop pak22.psarc to PSARC.exe)

6) Now copy pak22 folder with extracted files to gamefolder /PS3_GAME/USRDIR/build/main

7) Now you can delete pak22.psarc.

8) Copy PS3_GAME folder with game to your external fat32 usb hdd GAMEZ/Uncharted2/

9) Use Backup Manager to load game, should work fine.

WARNING!! NOT all games work off external HDD after having PSARC extracted! Please report any problems!

Mass Effect 3 DOES NOT RUN AFTER EXTRACTING PSARC!! #thanks to jizzontits (sexi name!) for that tip

This method has been tested by other users and confirmed working for:
-God of War 1 & 2 PSN edition (Credits to jizzontits)

the psn versions of god of war 1 and 2 work on external with gamedata tool if you extract the .psarc files. you have to move the extracted files out of the folder with the .psarc's name and put them right into the usdir folder.

this might work with the bluray versions if the files are the same, but i don't have it so i'm just speculating.

levels.psarc is 5.78GB. For external, extract levels.psarc with PSARC.exe & zlib.net.dll. Both files should be in the same place the psarc file is, i.e. levels.psarc in this case. You'll have a levels folder with folders and files in. Arrange the structure so that you have one FM folder under USRDIR. In FM you must have 2 folders, COMMON and PS3. In PS3 folder you have ANIMATION, EGRAPHICS, GAMEDB, LEVELS, MOVIES, PARTICLES, SCRIPTS, SOUND, and TEXT. In COMMON you have BIN, FONTS, LEVELS, LIPSYNC, and SOUND, and a bunch of files. Delete (or move to another folder in case you need it later) levels.psarc. Delete PSARC.exe & zlib.net.dll (or move it to anther folder if you want to use it on another game). Enjoy!

Removing Multiplayer (tested)

Both Co-op and Multiplayer modes require going online so currently aren't of any use to us, and I always keep a backup of deleted files just in case.

Go to PS3 folder and delete MpChunks.sb and MpChunks.toc
Go to PS3\Loc folder and delete any languages that aren't "en". (this has been mentioned by previous contributors)
Go to PS3\Levels and delete all COOP and MP folders.

Obviously if you delete those and try to play MP it'll crash.

Open up the game folder and go into USRDIR. Search for the following files: EXTRASCIN1.PSARC and EXTRASCIN2.PSARC. Delete them both. These files carry nothing more than some unnecessary extra videos (making of, etc) and take a lot of space on the HDD.

2. Delete multiplayer (optional) - only if you don't need it.

3. Edit Archives

Now, again in the USRDIR folder, search for a file called ARCHIVES and open it with Notepad on your computer. You should see exactly 19 .PSARC names in lines and the number 19 above all.
If you left out step 2, remove the following names from the text: EXTRASCIN1.PSARC, EXTRASCIN2.PSARC.
If you included step 2, remove the both above and these: MULTIPLAYER.PSARC, MP-RESOURCES.PSARC

Now change the number 19 to 17 if left out step 2, or to 15 if you included step 2, then check the examples below. If looks like it should, save it with notepad and put it back into your USRDIR folder.

4. Delete languages

Warning: Your PS3 menu language must be the same language as in the game or it will freeze.
Note: US versions might only have one language, euro releases usually have several.

With the languages that you'd like to leave in mind, go into the USRDIR folder of the game and delete ANY others. For example:
You want your game to be in english only. To do this, you simply delete ALL the .PSARC files that have any other language name on them (GERMAN.PSARC, MP-GERMAN.PSARC, RUSSIAN.PSARC, MP-RUSSIAN.PSARC, ITALIAN.PSARC, MP-ITALIAN.PSARC etc.)

Leave only the files for your desired language(s), in this example it is: ENGLISH.PSARC and MP-ENGLISH.PSARC

5. Edit Localized Archives

After deleting the languages you don't need, look for a file called LOCALIZED_ARCHIVES in your USRDIR folder and open it with notepad.
Here you'll see all the names of all language .PSARC files in lines and a number (file count)above all.
Now remove every line that is NOT your language and set the right filecount.

Example: You removed anything but english in your USRDIR, so you have only ENGLISH.PSARC and MP-ENGLISH.PSARC left there.
That means you have to remove every line beside the ones for the english files and set the filecount on 2, since there's only 2 lines left.
The final result will look like this:

Example 2:
