Nice thanks for the info. To be totally true, I've never even heard of USB 3.0.
I bought an external hard disk(WD My Passport 500GB) with USB 3.0 just for playing PS3 games through and I wasSHOCKED
when the PS3 didn't recognize it.
After googling for hours, I made a conclusion from the threads I read: PS3 recognizes external hard drives with USB 2.0 and under.
I got really surprised that my ex HDD said that it's USB 3.0 which is also USB 2.0, and the PS3 recognizes USB 2.0 but didn't see mine!

I found one solution: Buying a USB HUB with power (like an AC adapter) and plugging the ex HDD to it. Many people confirmed that it's working, but I just paid for my ex HDD so now I should pay extra for a powered USB HUB? :eviltongue:
Today, I decided to google again because I wanted this thing to work! And I found the best solution which doesn't require buying anything.
This is the way:
I WAS SO HAPPY BECAUSE IT WORKED! VERY SIMPLE WAY! I COULDN'T BELIEVE HOW IT JUST NEED A SPECIAL WAY OF CONNECTING IT!Please read carefully:
First, plug the usb 3.0 cord WITHOUT the disc plugged in, just the cable WD provided you.
Then, grab the disc with one hand, and the cable with the other one.
What you have to do is insert the plug on the disc reaaaaally slowly, and STOP right before its fully plugged.
You will see the disc starts spinning, and the little white light will flash.
Finally, press it firmly to the end, and voila! recognized at full speed, no stupid hubs, or anything.
Seems to be hard at first, but then you get used to it.
Thanks for your remark. Another remark is....of course.... MAKE SURE IT'S FORMATTED TO FAT32!
Thanks for reading this thread and +rep if I helped! I was just about to sell my ex HDD until I found this way lol
UPDATE: Yeah I kinda forgot to say that ALL USB 3.0 HARD DISKS WORK WITH NO PROBLEM ON NORMAL PS3. THEY DON'T WORK ON SLIM SO THIS METHOD MIGHT HELP. AND THIS METHOD IS ONLY FOR WD (WESTERN DIGITAL) HARD DISKS SO SEAGATE AND THE OTHERS WILL HAVE NO PROBLEM.(Maybe)

would a usb 2.0 cable not work?

tl;dr: buy a damn usb hub. problem fixed.
This doesn't work for every 3.0 drive only the ones that support one button backup or a similar backup method. Please keep that in mind and also you can mess up your drive by doing this so its recommended to buy a hub unless once you accomplish this you never wanna turn your ps3 off;p Your either gonna end up with a messed up file system on your ext or have it completely broken altogether eventually

The reason this happens is because when you put the cord in partially it gives power to the shell but doesn't activate the safety that stops the drive from booting up fully and indexing this is a safety measure to prevent damage. This hotswapping method prolly isn't a good idea unless your desperate and can't afford a stop to the local dollarama with 2 bucks to spare. Its not a good idea to use this method just warning ya now;p
