Something you can try: games that you play the most, you can copy them to internal HDD until you finish the game then remove it. So you can play with normal speed.

What are you talking about I have portable WD My Passport usb 3.0 exactly like yours except mines 1 tb and the ps3 recognizes it perfectly? I've never done any weird plugin method to get it to work. All usb 3.0 devices are backwards compatible with usb 2.0 and 1.1.

yeah me too i also have 500gb WD passport 3.0 that i bought 2 days ago and luckily my ps3 recognized it. I am so noob that reading this thread first without trying the hdd on my console makes me think of swapping it to a 2nd hand WD Element 2.0. Maybe updating the driver of WD passport is the key i dont know as i've said im noob. :( now i wonder if i can use it to play games externally. I am afraid i might broke it coz it doesnt have a power supply.

note: also i used EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition in formatting my hdd to fat32 you can try that and see if it works.

Are you both using fat ps3?
I have the same WD My Passport 3.0 and i had to resort to this method to get it detected.

Does that means seagate and other branded 3.0 usb hard disk will have no problems being recognized by ps3 slim?

Nope mine is ps3 slim that's why im so worried when i read this thread. Luckily for me i dont need to buy a usb hub with power adapter or just a usb hub anymore. :) maybe new stocks of WD passport in the market already fix this problem coz i bought mine just 2 days ago. Just an opinion.
