How to CFW a PS3 on 3.56+, 3.7x, 4.xx, 4.31 ect....

I got tired of seeing this question, I am hoping for a sticky thread here, it may very well help the newcomers to the scene!

There is NO WAY to JAILBREAK, CFW, Run Backups, or even install ANY CFW on any PS3 higher than 3.55 OFW.

PS3 Units Supported for CFW, Jailbreak, etc

ALL FAT PS3 (aka Original Launch) 20gb, 40gb, 60gb, 80gb, 160gb
SOME Slim PS3 Units with factory firmware of 3.55 or lower.
CECH-20XXA 120GB
CECH-20XXB 250GB
CECH-21XXA 120GB
CECH-21XXB 250GB
CECH-25XXA 120GB/160GB
CECH-25XXB 250GB/320GB Manufacture Date 2010 OR LOWER

MAXIMUM INSTALLED ORIGINAL FIRMWARE (OFW) TO BE ABLE TO INSTALL A CUSTOM FIRMWARE (CFW)

3.55 (OFW) THATS IT!!!! (any higher and you will require a flasher of some kind, THERE IS NO WAY AROUND THIS!)

Should you see a News Section post on a new (or improved) CFW available that is version 4.XX or higher, this DOES NOT mean there is a sudden new CFW you can install on your 4.XX OFW machine!

If there was a NEW CFW that comes out that is finally able to be installed on a PS3 with a OFW HIGHER than 3.55/3.72/4.21/4.30/etc it will most surely be posted in the title of the new news post! There is NO NEED to ask in every single new thread on a new or improved CFW release news post to ask "Does this mean this will work on my 3.7X+ OFW?"

Q: Is there ANY way to install CFW on an OFW machine that is higher than 3.55 OFW?
A: YES THERE IS!! But only one way. You will need to buy a Hardware Flasher like E3 or Progskeet and downgrade it! (THERE IS NO OTHER WAY)

Q: Is the REBUG 999 DOWNGRADER CFW able to downgrade my OFW that is over 3.55?
A: NO! That is only used to downgrade from CFW 4.21/4.30/4.31 back to 3.55/3.41 ONLY!

In closing I wrote this because I am sick and tired of seeing posts asking these questions, I figure with the title worded the way it is, everyone should read it and will not feel the need to post these very easy to find and common knowledge questions.

Also, for all you on OFW over 3.55 Slims, I HIGHLY recommend you buy an E3 Flasher, which is cheap now a days and with that installed you can set up your PS3 to DUAL BOOT the latest OFW and CFW with nothing other than powering off your PS3, flip a switch and swap hard drives. It is literally THIS EASY and FAST!

Assuming you have two 500gb hdd, one labeledCFW, the other OFW & all six switches on the E3 Flasher are in the DOWN position & are currently on OFW.

Currently on OFW 4.31 w/500gb HDD

Power off PS3 and unplug the power cable.
Power off theESATA HDD Station
Remove 500gb labeled OFW HDD
Insert 500gb labeled CFW Drive
Flip E3 Flasher Switch 2 from the DOWN position to UP position
Power on ESATA HDD Station
Plug in power to PS3
Power on and CFW BOOTS

Currently on CFW 4.21 REBUG w/500gb HDD

Power off PS3 and unplug the power cable.
Power off the ESATA HDD Station
Remove 500gb labeled CFW HDD
Insert 500gb labeled OFW Drive
Flip E3 Flasher Switch 2 from the UP position to DOWN position
Power on ESATA HDD Station
Plug in power to PS3
Power on and OFW BOOTS

Now two things....

When switching from CFW to OFW or from OFW to CFW the power must be COMPLETELY OFF on both ESATA DOCK and PS3 SYSTEM. Hence unplugging PS3 and turning off power to ESATA Dock.
This process (excluding boot time, which varies due to how much/many data/games are installed) takes all of 30 seconds to switch from CFW>OFW or OFW>CFW

I hope this helps people and REALLY hope it stops pointless posts.

To be honest, they should work on this and make it possible to install a custom firmware on 3.56+ (i'm not saying super slim consoles but atleast firmwares higher than 3.55 as original one). PS3 won't last forever and whoever buys a new one won't be able to JB it as long as this is not done. I mean, we have the 3.55 cfw for a while now, how come no one has been working on newest systems or stock firmware higher than 3.55 ? Idon't get it o_o

trust me they have it's just taking a long time for them to find a work around sony patched the ofw after 3.55 so it dose a full match up of keys b4 it updates and all the dev's are busy fixing the cfw that is already out so when they perfect it someone will work on 3.55+ cfw

@coragin001. I have a PS3 on 3.55cfw & another on 4.30cfw, but I come across PS3's in lots with FW's below & above 3.55. For the one's above 3.55 & are able to be downgraded, will the E3 flasher allow me to downgrade multiple systems or is it a 1 time, 1 system tool like the coolrunner is for the xbox 360?

Thanks for the feedback, i thought they were not working on it at all since the CFW 4.XX & 3.55 seems to be stable for now. As for the full match up of keys starting @ OFW 3.56, since they pretty much cracked the whole thing now (lv0 etc),shouldn't it be easier for them now ? I've heard of Lv0.2 or w/e it's so i know the security seems to be better since then, but i thought it was related to the super slim & 3000's series architecture only.

I'm not concerned for now as i own a JB'd PS3, but it'll be nice for everyone who has a super slim or 3000+.

Useful, I've been thinking about this, but I am always too shy for these kind of things lol. Let me hear the staff concerning the sticky and I'll let you know. Another good idea would be making an in depth e3 flasher guide and gather more detalis from the devwiki (adding the link should be enough) and maybe a tutorial video because many of the new users also want to know how to downgrade step by step the moment they find out they can't hack their ps3's.

Because it is NOT a tutorial! I did not write it as a tutorial, it was not meant to be a tutorial.

There is NO tutorial here! The ONLY thing described is how I switch between OFW/CFW with my E3. Which is not a useful tutorial to ANYONE since to my knowledge no one has been dual booting E3 on 4.21CFW/4.31OFW because the files necessary to do this HAVE NOT BEEN RELEASED!

I want to know who moved this here & why?! It does NOT belong here! It is NOT a TUTORIAL! And yes I am quite irritated! Because this was not written as a tutorial and the info in my original post is not even layed out as a tutorial! It is giving the obvious answer that there is NO WAY to install CFW on ANY OFW above 3.56. No where in this have I detailed anything in a "How to" manner, given complete steps on anything or even claimed it to be a tutorial!

I am asking this to be MOVED BACK to either GENERAL or NEWS as a STICKY(if possible)! The purpose of this is to stop the dumb questions in EVERY CFW thread asking if x CFW can be installed on 3.56+ OFW.

It is INTENTIONALLY MISLEADING to get NOOBS to read it, so they will STOP asking the most retarded question in EVERY CFW thread/forum!

If it is not moved back, I will be forced to write a NEW post in GENERAL or NEWS saying the SAME THING!

THIS IS NOT A TUTORIAL! If you find a tutorial here, please point it out to me, because the only thing close to a tutorial is how I switch between OFW/CFW, but it cannot be done by ANYONE because I NEVER gave instructions on HOW TO get any CFW above 3.55 on the E3 ON BOARD NOR FLASH! And there is NO TUTORIAL ANYWHERE that explains how to do this! Because the necessary files to do it HAVE NOT BEEN RELEASED! I figured out how to do this myself!

If you are asking if you can use an E3 Flasher on one system, downgrade it, then use it on a completely different system and downgrade that one too, then yes, it can do that. However! Be warned. The connections on the NOR chip in the PS3 are not all in the identical same place, meaning they are not a 100% copy on each machine. Connector pins can be shifted and settled differently per console, some connection pins moved slightly left/right, raised/lowered, etc, etc. And the more you attach and remove the E3 NOR Clip it will wear out and the connections will become less 'springy' and may or may not connect withe the contacts perfectly.

Can it do three or four or even ten? Yes. But with each system it will wear out the Clips pins more and more, thus making its connections less and less conductive.
