Thread: ps3 broke!!:(

hi i am a newbie to this and i bought my ps3 40gb when it came out 3 years ago and it does not read discs anymore when i put a disc in it just comes up with the loading icon in the top right corner and does not say disc read error or anything like that.

i was wondering if you guys can help me i am willing to open up my ps3 and replace something but i dont know what, do i replace the whole blueray drive or the laser and its deck or just the laser.

the thing is i like playing online and do not want to chip/mod/hack my ps3 like i have done to my psp but i just want it to be a normal working ps3.

and btw before anyone says ring up sony you will have warranty my warranty is not valid.

also i know what i am doing when i open my ps3 it is just what i need any suggestions on what i should replace?

A. the blueray drive
B. the laser with the spinning mechanism
C. just the laser

my laser is KEM-400AAA and is pretty rare to find :L

any suggestions are welcome :D

First make sure your PS3 took a dump on you (broke). Go into recovery mode and do option #3, if that doesnt work then its done for :(.

i cannot find recovery mode could you talk me through on how to acess it please

1. With your PS3 off, hold down the power button until the PS3 comes on then off and the power light turns red.

2. Release the power button then hold it down again, you will hear a beep, a second beep (still hold down power button), then two quick beeps (beep...beep) then release power button. You should now be prompt to hook your controller into the USB.

i clicked option three and it came up "the hard disks file sysstem is corrupted and needs to be restored" when i do the instructions it comes back up normally and then when i try to do what you told me again the same thing pops up what should i do??? i am confused lol

I think your stuck, try the other options too if that dont work then you need to get your hands dirty.

KEM-400AAA get them off ebay you can either get the whole drive for 54.99 (uk) or just the laser and deck for about 41.95.
If your not too confident about opening your drive and swapping them i wold go for the whole drive and just put your pcb on but if you feel you can do it just grab the laser and deck same again if you feel confident enough to fit it without the deck you can save another fiver trouble is though if you get just the laser on its own they normally come with an anti static point which you need to remove with a solder iron.
Fitting these though is a piece of cake takes me 10 mins max but then again i have fitted a lot.

so if i get just the laser and the deck then it will not come with a anti-static point, also if i get the laser with the deck will it definatley fix my ps3 100% as i cannot be spending money on something and then it does not change my ps3 laser reply back please :D

You could always open it up take your top off the drive case and push the gear down so it thinks you have loaded game in and watch the laser trouble with this though sometimes they do light up but their just weak this will give you a chance to give it a good clean and try it again.
From what you have said im 100% sure a new laser will sort your prob and no when i have had a laser and deck in the past it never had an anti static point on it.
Also when you do change it the little brown plastic wire strip that comes from the decks motor is easy to break so be careful with that.

i have a big problem with my drive atm anyway:

once i took it part to try and resolve this problem by cleaning the laser but when i put the ps3 back together again whenever i rurn the ps3 on the drive makes a sound like it is collecting a disc and when i try to put a dis in i have to push it right in any advice on how to fix this please mate :D
