Many people have got certain games with files larger than 4gb to play from external via multiman, gaia etc. If the games have a .psarc file over 4gb, then you can use a program called psarc.exe to extract that file into a folder containg all the smaller files and replace the .psarc file with that folder. I have used it on Tekken 6 and Uncharted 2 and both play fine. Google psarc.exe and you will find the download/tutorial at one of the many ps3 sites.
