Default PS2 Backward Compatibility? what does that mean?

I want to buy a Playstation 3 for my son but I am unsure of what's best. He has a Playstation 2 with alot of games now. So I definitely want to buy one that will allow him to continue to use his PS2 games. I am thinking "backward compatibility" deals with that but I am not sure how. So basically I need feedback on what GB is best.

If its mainly BC that your after in a PS3 then you want to look for one of the earliest models as possible, but they are prone to the Yellow Light Of Death (YLOD).

Take a look HERE for a table showing which systems are BC, but as I said you are looking to buy a pre-owned system from a second hand store or FleaBay if you get desperate

    Hope this helps
