What is the HDD exchange utility for in Rebug cfw? It clones the internal HDD to an external USB one. So what can I do with a clone of my ps3's hdd that can't be used as internal?

You may use it as a backup only...

But there's no way to restore those files back to an internal hdd afterwards so what can I do with such a backup?

it's not for backup. it's to transfer all of your data except trophies to a larger hard drive.
you connect a larger hard drive with USB
    use the utility
    put the new drive in
use the console with the larger drive

But it clones the HDD, meaning whatever available free space there was on the first drive will be the same on the new one, even if the physical capacity is higher.

I've been wondering this myself. my 500 is full with only 6gb left and i was thinking about upgrading to a 1tb. if this truly "clones" the drive, won't that mean my 1tb will still only have 6gb of available space? if this is the case, then am i better off using sony's backup utility? and if thats the case, then will the backup utility back up everything including the "GAMES" folder on the internal?

what sucks even more is that i would have to have another 500gb external to back it up to and then use that special backup drive to restore to the new 1tb, right?
