what is your ps3 current firmware ? if its above 3.55 it would not let you downgrade to 3.55,
if you are on cfw 3.55 try installing official 3.55 from recovery mode.

he said updating not downgrading.
it seems that your install-data is corrupt. did you download it again to be sure that this isnīt the case?

Here's a tutorial that I sent to another member a few days ago, but do it on your own risk:
- take out the hard drive
- connect hard drive to pc
- open up disk management - in win7 it asked me to make a master book record, so I did.
- format in NTFS - that's right, NTFS - don't use quick format
- get the rom of whatever version you were on before you upgraded - i had to search, but i found the us 3.30 rom
- copy that rom to usb drive in folders PS3 ==> UPDATE ==> put rom named PS3UPDAT.PUP here
- shut down pc, take out hd, take usb drive too
- put hd back in ps3, put usb stick in ps3
- boot ps3
- a screen will pop up. press select + start
- another screen (i think) later, press select + start
- configure your ps3 setup - done
BTW did you have any problems with your blu-ray drive?

If you want to be more informed about the scene, check the ps3devwiki

Yeah I did what beharii said not long ago. Basically, the update stays on your internal hdd but in a state that is not yet installed (the setup kinda). So all you need to do to prevent the install from restarting is to wipe the data with your computer. You might wanna scan your hdd for bad sectors, cause that might be what'S causing the update to stop installing too.
