Thread: One year later.... and here we are.

So here we are, the day after Christmas, and for most of us it's been one year since we got our PS3s. It's also been a full year since most of us also last updated our systems, to 3.55 that is. I may have tried different flavors of 3.55, but 3.55 is what I'm using to this day. I don't know how to feel. On the one hand I have gotten TONS of use out of my system, and still have TONS more use just waiting for me still. And yet, one can't help but wonder how the newer games just out of reach are like.

It's bitter sweet to say the least. So has a year without any REAL updates shaken your resolve to stay on CFW or are you just about at your limit and ready to go back to legit OFW just so you can play the newer games, since because buying a second PS3 is not a realistic option for most of us, what with life and reality getting in the way.

Me? I intend to stick it out on purely CFW, no dongles. Let me clear that up. I have no problem with dongles per say, but when a group of thieves come along and replace the standard DRM with their own, and then hold you hostage to their own game rips, I just have to draw the line. I have bought unlocking tools throughout the years, SNES with cart adapters, Saturn with Game shark, PS1 with swap trick, DC... with a CD burner (LOL), XBOX with Xecuter1 etc, etc, etc.... So I am not against buying hardware to unlock a system, but those solutions were just that, solutions, and not a way to hold you hostage.

Then came the PlayStation 3. (pause for dramatic effect) I got my PS3 as a gift, as I was not going to buy one until FF7 remake was made. I had a 360 that I flashed myself so I had Forza, Halo, etc, to play so I wasn't missing too much. A few exclusives here and there, but nothing too major. Then my 360 began to act like a 360. It decided it was an oven and not a games console. It overheated and died on me. I fixed it again and again, and it got to the point where it was comedic. I would fix it to only get 5 minutes of play time. Towards the end I didn't even bother putting the case on the system anymore. I just played it as a bare motherboard since I knew I would be fixing it soon enough. Until the day I grabbed a sledgehammer and destroyed that evil relic from Hell. It felt great, but I was left without game console to play games on my HDTV, and 80 360 games just sitting in a cd wallet (they are still in there too lol), but I digress...

After I recieved it the first thing, and I kid you not, was how to hack it(as I called it back then) so I could get all the games I wanted for free. Not where to get a deal on some older games, not even hooking it up to my HDTV to play it. I wanted to jailbreak it. LOL I know, I am such a shameless pirate. So I here if you get these dongles you can go into JB mode and play the games off your HDD. AWESOME!!! Oh wait, you need to have a certain firmware? If you were here you would have witnessed the fastest hook up in the world. SH*T I have 3.50 on my system, so that's out. So what else is left to me? Nothing.... DAMNED. Updated to 3.55 and played th few games I had and the few I later picked up for a few bucks.

Two week later...

Geohot? I know that name from somewhere.... OH YEAH, I am using his JB for my iPod Touch 2.5G. He jailbroke the PS3? Niiiiiiccceeee. Grabbed his first CFW, installed it, and the rest is history. I later went to Kmaew then Rebug(which I still use to this day) but they were all 3.55.

An ENTIRE year has come and gone without any real updates? That can't be right. The 360 scene was constantly moving forward. But this stagnation can be blamed on a few devs. Because even when someone or a group of people even hint of the possibility that they want to move the scene forward, they swoop in and threaten or hack the opposition to kill their momentum or outright make them quit the scene. This scene is a disgrace plain and simple.

Wow, I meant to make a small post and it turned into a blog post LOL oh well, guess I needed to get this off my chest it seems. So I would love to hear your discussion on the points I brought up above.

I agree, DC...this is starting to get tiring. I bought mine a bit after you did...I watched the scene grow restless as geohot posted in his blog the progress he made. I saw his post about metldr the same day, and I said "I must buy one now"....then I watched as PS3break and others were being sold, people started buying them and releasing game dumps...and I said "I must own one".....then I watched as GH posted about writing code for a CFW that would be homebrew only and I said "someone will crack this to play games....I must own one".....then I watched as Waninkoko posted about his epic CFW playing backups and I said "that's it, I'm buying one!!!" a few days later I got my paycheck, and I noticed Wanin had patched his CFW, released v2, and claimed it was safe for all consoles.....that night I bought one. JUst like DCjoedog, I bought mine specifically to 'hack' it...the girl at walmart asked if I wanted a warranty, and I laughed, then told her 'why?? I'm voiding the warranty the second it gets home', paid, and went home to install wanin's cfw v2....I've used several 3.55 cfw's up until rebug released their first cfw. I installed that, and haven't ever looked back to any other build. Yes, 3.55 has brought me a TON of happiness and enjoyment. However, I'm still thirsty for more!!! One of these days someone's gonna tell math & his fag cronies to shove it and just drop everything we need.

Exactly, I can wait for the new things to happen in their own time as for somethings, mostly things out of my control, I have a lot of patience. So it's not too big a deal for me, but I just sit and wonder about what else is out there just out of my reach.

I agree....just sometimes i get really impatient and I wanna just scream, or rage all over math...we all know he's the main douchbag holding us up. I hope Sony gets fed up one day and just nails his balls to the wall. when that happens, I think other devs will start popping back up out of the woodwork. I genuinely think he's 90% to blame for the slow scene. Not because he has what we need (he doesn't) but because he's a turd and he can't just mind his own business. He's driven almost everyone away because they all hate him so much.

Realistically, if people would stop talking about him altogether for 6 months, I think we'd never see him again and things would start picking up.

So...I've always been a Playstation fanboy (I NEVER touched an Xbox in my life), been a fan of hacking/pirating games since a long time, have my ps2 hardmodded and been burning games since a long time, then I got a wii as a gift and soon enough I hardmodded then softmodded it...And up untill this year, I've been considering buying a PS3 however the high prices of games (they sell for ~$65 for any new games) and since I was in university studying engineering, I didnt have a lot of free time, and being the gamer that I am I knew I couldnt resist it...Then this year, I read the news on Gamespot on how the PS3 has been jailbroken, Geohot, fail0verflow...and I KNEW i had to buy one :D And so I did, this february. Jailbroken the same day I got it (was on 3.50, lucky me :D), had MM installed, and booted my first game off HDD same night (FIFA2011, playess discless cuz I hadnt bought a game yet) and so on...And enjoyed a ton of games on my PS3 during that summer (I restricted myself during studies).

So! I have missed out on a LOT of games, there's a long list of great games I haven't even touched yet (Uncharted 3, Infamous 2, Vanquish, Prototype, all Duplex games -yes, believe it or not i only played Castle Crashers) so I'm fine with all the games I got. I didnt even touch ReactPSN yet!
I've never been big on online-multiplayer games, I LOVE RPGs and single-player-focused games, so PSN wasnt much of an issue for me...

Bottom line: I'm happy with my 3.55 CFW. I'm on a modified Kmeaw with cinavia disabled (heh, LY MFW )

And while the ps3 scene has been quite slow (screw you $ony) and due to some unruly devs (enough bashing already). However I still have some faith in ps3 devs that we'll get 3.6+ CFW one day or another If i ever get bored of my games collection (unlikely till next summer) I might consider TB if it's not been cloned/hacked yet. Otherwise I'm happy on my 3.55

Ah, yes, a year later and a few dollars shorter I can honestly say that I will still wait. Now let me be clear, I HAVE thought about buying a true blue dongle, well I have since my 360 died out on me. I can honestly only name 2 newer games that I want to play but can't, while everyone else whines about fifa or PES. I know, I should be patient, but I feel A YEAR is patient, is it not? I'll sit here and play another game of hyperdimension neptunia, or Smackdown Vs. Raw 2010 untill I can see something move foward. Never going to official firmware again, even if another CFW never comes out.

I let my ps3 sit for 2 years just waiting for a jailbreak. The games were/are so ridiculously over-priced that I couldn't justify anything more than gamefly. The sad part is that after I freed my ps3 from the shackles of Sony's ofw, I got kinda spoiled. I've spent more time ripping and archiving than I have playing said titles. Still, I love cfw and I won't update until a play-or-die title comes out, like a new god of war. I've only played maybe 20% of my library, and of those I only play 20% to completion. It's become more of a screening device for my pc. Regardless, it is pretty sad that the scene has slowed to a crawl, but the last time I bought a dongle, cfw came out literally a week after I got it. Never again. Yeah, Math sux donkey d**k, but I'm fine with waiting. Maybe I'll actually play through what I have before new cfw comes out. anything's possible....
