Default Playstation 3 Compatability for PS1 and PS2 games.

To all present and future Mods: "Please do not edit this post. I am well aware of the rules for advertising other sites and why.... are you aware? Thank you."

For a complete list of backward compatibility for the PS3, please check the official $ony website.

    Code:
    http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus
There are 4 different SKU's (types of PS3 models, basically) that are out the in the world right now. The models include the 20 Gig, 40 Gig, 60 Gig, and 80 Gig. When it comes to backwards compatibility, the list is as follows:

    20GB PLAYSTATION 3 System (model# CECHB01)

Some PlayStation 2 or PlayStation format software titles may perform differently on this system than they do on PlayStation 2 or PlayStation systems, or may not perform properly on this system.

    40GB PLAYSTATION 3 System (model# CECHG01 and CECHH01)

This model of the PLAYSTATION 3 system is designed to play PLAYSTATION®3 format software and has limited backward compatibility. This system is not compatible with, and will not play, PlayStation 2 format software. Some PlayStation format software may play on this system.

40GB Limited Edition Gunmetal Gray PLAYSTATION 3 system

This model of the PLAYSTATION 3 system is designed to play PLAYSTATION®3 format software and has limited backward compatibility. This system is not compatible with, and will not play, PlayStation 2 format software. Some PlayStation format software may play on this system.

    60GB PLAYSTATION 3 System (model# CECHA01)
Some PlayStation 2 or PlayStation format software titles may perform differently on this system than they do on PlayStation 2 or PlayStation systems, or may not perform properly on this system.

    80GB PLAYSTATION 3 System (CECHE01)

This product has limited backward compatibility with PlayStation and PlayStation 2 format software. Many PlayStation 2 format software titles operate, but full compatibility is not guaranteed. Updating the system software may improve compatibility.

This info was taken from the North american region of the official $ony PS3 site. To learn more about your specific region of Playstation 3 system, then visit the universal $ony PS3 site located here:

    Code:

This is a list of PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games, for which the PlayStation 3 is backwards compatible. This list is updated as new PS3 firmware editions are released by Sony. The 40GB, 160GB and 320GB versions, as well as the 80GB re-release and the slim version of the PS3 are not backwards compatible with PS2 games because all hardware chips from the former console are omitted and there is no software emulation. However, all versions of the PS3 are able to play PlayStation games. Although the Guitar Hero games themselves are compatible, the connector mounted on its special controller are not, due to the PS3's lack of ports for PS2 accessories. The guitars can only be used by utilizing third party USB-to-PS2 adapters.

This list assumes that the PlayStation 3 system is fully up to date.

    I don't think so... I honestly don't remember.

but I had a couple posts up months and months ago with links to a non-warez or non-blog site. I think it was to GameFAQS or something like that. Maybe somebody asked me where I got my Swap Magic disk, I don't know.

But what I do remember is when a group of new Mods where elected, they changed my post without telling me!

    >:(

So people started PMing me with the site link and I had no idea wtf they where talking about. After that, I forgot the link (of course) so I had to completely change the whole post. Matter of fact, I trashed it and it was an extremely helpful post.

    I think.

LOL, like I said... it was ages ago.

Yeah its an old post I know but would like to add for information .... MOST if not ALL PS3's can/will play RETAIL or REAL PS1 games regardless of model!

secondly some PS2 games will share content with their PS3 equivalent of the SAME GAME even if that PS3 cannot load PS2 games directly

Example SINGSTAR PS3 games .. the disk swap option ALLOWS content from ORIGINAL PS2 SINGSTAR games to be read into the PS3 version and played as normal .... although its only temporary it allows you to change and use older content without having to dig out an old PS2 console
