Whats Needed:
1: an 20GB, 60GB or an Backwards Compatable 80GB(4USB ports)
2: Torx Screwdriver
3: Phillips Screwdriver
4: Tiny arse eyeglass phillips screwdriver
5: a CD Based PS2 Game (DVD may work havent tried yet.)
6: My preset Homebrew Disc w/ NES,SNES,SegaGen emu, Codebreaker 9.2, 9.3 hdl patched and 9.3 Disc patched Codebreaker (the disc patched one is "Codebreaker_patched.elf") SMS, MyPS2 1.1, uLaunch 4.41, OpenPS2Loader 0.7 and a few others OR
6a: CDGENPS2 3.0 and uLaunch 4.41 ELF edition
I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS IF YOUR PS3 HAS WARRENTY STILL!!!! AND IM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR DAMAGES MADE TO YOUR PS3!!!!!!
the reason i said you need above screwdrivers is your going to haveto Open the PS3
First remove the torx screw. you'll see it on the bottom, when the PS3 would stand like this http://scawley.files.wordpress.com/2..._brand_new.jpg you'll see a lil sticky / tiny rubber stub.. remove these to see the screw and remove it
next slide the cover down towards you.
remove the screws and map them out not all of them are the same length!
now remove this half slowly or you'll shread the ribbon cable going to the card reader.if you never use it you can safely disconnect it from the controller board and the reader.
now CAREFULLY there are 4 smaller screws holding the Blu-ray drive in place remove and map em out. (so you dunn mix em up later.)
now slide the drive carefully up to its right disconnect the power cable and move it up more to you can see the data ribbon cable the lil black thin lid at the end of it can flip up to remove the cable from the drive
this is where you needed teh eyeglass screwdriver. remove all screws and again map em out. and remove the top half of the metal cover. and unscrew the next set of screws keeping the top of the drive itself off and if you plan on putting it back together normally be carefull not to rip the wire on the side!
be carefull theres an assembly that helps guides discs in and out if you break this dont bother putting the cover back on.. but w/ the top cover removed, carefully remove the white disc in that lid..
heres the easier parts!!!!
now w/ a CD based PS2 game (if using a DVD game dunn work burn my tool ISO to dvd (i know a waste hunh? or extract it and rebuild it by filling the disc w/ what you want using cdgenps2.) put it on teh black spindle and put that maget on the verry middle where that "black spindle" is seen
Press the farleft metal tab to where it beeps and disc spins (thats the tab the eject button uses tap lightly or you'll bend it!) and let the console read the disc.
now DO NOT PRESS EJECT AGAIN!! either wait 8 mins for the drive to idle out and spindown or forceably stop it [you could in teh long run ruin the drive this way..] so i suggest waiting the 8mins or if impatient go and forcably remove teh magnet and swap w/ the burnt disc and put the magnet back on in teh middle (may take you a few times to get the hang of it where it dunn spin right off the disc.)
press X on "Playstation 2 Format " and Bingo if done right by burning my ISO at slowlest speed possible or making your own (you need a system.cnf at the root of the disc and make sure it points to launchelf. you can use mine but name it BOOT.ELF) that you will see it booting launchelf and load the default cnf that came w/ that download package.
yes you Can save teh cnf to the virtual memory card BUT in the XMB it will show up as corrupt data just ignore that just before loading the donor disc, that you assign a PS2 virtual memcard to Slot 1
some downsides.
using an guide to turn a game into the trigger disc via 007 Agent under fire or this method ULAUNCHELF WILL NOT HAVE USB NOR CDFS ACCESS!!!!!!!!
however i dont know if stuff like codebreaker w/ this idea will have Day1 via Net or USB will work but i know Memorycard management doesnt work it will create unencrypted data thus not work! and the HDD part of that manager wont have HDD access
i dont know if HDLoader will work either. i havent tested it yet because though i have Final fantasy XI installed, i dont wanna go thru an 8hr fresh install update again.. you could try the ulaunchelf "ELF" swap trick like in 007 agent under fire w/ the POL installer disc as theres a few parts it launches an ELF and theoritcly grant HDD access but.. its untested and im not going to fiddle w/ that
apparently OpenPS2Loader works but thats because its normally launched using Actuall SwapMagic 3.6/3.8 CODER discs
and i dont know if making the ISO w/ cdgenPS2 then burning to DVDR will work.
i did this w/ FW 3.30 and the "PS2 System" download from PSN installed (because i play FFXI via the PS3) and w/ an 80GB BC PS3
the unintended bonuses..
this method allows PS2 and PS1 backups to play w/ PS1 Backups for a donor swaping disc just as w/ PS2 games the higher the TOC the better!
if you use this for playing backups w/o buying Swapmagic, Makesure you check sony's compatability list that if there will be a problem or if it'll work but not every game that works is listed they only list games that dont require any trickery to run aka like an older post of mine where i had to assign the bluetooth remote to 7-A and sometimes removing the batteries of it to get controller response in Chrono Trigger PS1
AGAIN I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH ME NOR ANY STAFF OR ADMIN HERE IS RESPONSIBLE IF YOU PERMANENTLY DAMAGE YOUR PS3 WITH THIS!! YOUR AT TOTAL RESPONSIBILITY AND RISK.
i only did this for myself the two arms in the drive assembly responsible for ejecting a disc had failed and i had to remove a disc from it.
