Unlocking US PSVita 3G?
Hi,
I'm thinking about buying a PSVita and since I live in a ****ty country where everything is much more expensive than elsewhere I decided to buy it in the USA (I'll be going there for a vacation from March 1st). I wanted to buy the 3G version but I found out that it's locked to AT&T carrier.
Would it make sense to buy the 3G version and wait until somebody finds out how to unlock it (like iPhone) so I could use it in Europe?
I'd really want the 3G to use GPS so it's kinda high-priority for me but there's no use to it if it's going to be almost impossible to unlock.
I don't really want to import as well because the stupid laws of my country impose 90% tax on any shipment from outside the country.
Thank you for your help!

Why not just get the WIFI version, it should work anywhere?
-
There are two reasons. First, the Wi-Fi version doesn't have GPS which I could really use. Second, the only place I can connect to Wi-fi is at my home. There are virtually no hot-spots in the country and I'm often on travels. Having a 3G and thus, being able to connect eg. check my mail from any place would be incredibly useful.

It's hard to say really, either pay the high price for a console from your region (so it will be locked to a service provider in your country) or play the waiting game of the PSV possibly being jailbroken.
-
Yeah, I know. That's why I'm asking how big is the probability of it being jailbroken because I have absolutely no idea about the status of the PSVita scene. If I knew there are some people working on hacking it and/or jailbreaking it, I'd be much more calm about this.

@MousE0910: All of the things you're wanting your 3G Vita to do are going to cost you a considerable penny on a monthly basis even if you can jailbreak it. Unlimited data packages - which it sounds like you'll be needing - don't really come cheaply in any country, and if your country of origin has next to no Wi-Fi points (I'm guessing somewhere Baltic/Eastern Europe) I'd assume monthly uncapped data contracts would cost a small fortune if not more. As for PAYG, that would probably be financial suicide.
I hope you keep us informed as I'm curious to find out the full running costs.

Well, there is only one single carrier that provides 3G coverage here and it has these 3 plans: $15/500MB, $26/2GB, $39/10GB monthly limit. Of course, the dollars are converted from local currency. Overall, I'd say it's not all that bad. From what I have seen, AT&T has more or less the same pricing for PSVita in U.S.
I think that 10GB limit per month should be enough so the cost would be manageable.
Oh and I'm from central Europe - Czech Republic to be exact. We're a post-communist country and as far as I know, one of the very few countries in which people elected communists of their free will. I hate this country.

I'm willing to bet that Sony have the same security on the Vita as they do on the PS3, tighter than a nun's butthole and twice as hard to get into.
DON'T BELIEVE ANY OF THE 3.6+ CFW BULL$HIT THAT YOU SEE ON YOUTUBE OR READ ON BLOGSPOT
LOL, I NEED TO EDIT THIS NOW, SHOWS HOW LONG I'VE BEEN AWAY

if you have a smartphone you could tether it
that's what i'm planning to do
-
No you can not unlock it.
Buy the Wifi version to save yourself money, you will not be able to use the 3g version.
Then buy yourself a mifi adapter.
Something like this:
Code:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UNLOCKED-HUAWEI-E586-MiFi-MOBILE-WiFi-BROADBAND-ROUTER-HSPA-/140681434687?pt=UK_Computing_Networking_SM&hash=item20c144563f
What is basically does is, you put your 3g card into and it basically turns into a wifi hotspot. That's your only option.
Or if you have an Iphone, you could tether it, using an app like MyWi 5.0 your phone would have to be jaibroken, ofcourse.
