Default Hoping For A FFVII Remake

    Hoping For A FFVII Remake

Today is the 15th anniversary of Final Fantasy VII’s Japanese launch, but I want to know, will we ever see this classic title remade?

By far, 1997′s Final Fantasy VII is Square-Enix’s most recognized and most popular game; the title helped catapult the PlayStation, the role-playing game (RPG) genre, and Square-Enix (which was then “Squaresoft,” one half of today’s whole) into mainstream relevance in North America. The game still commands a good deal of praise and nostalgia from fans of Japanese RPGs, and when Square-Enix celebrated the title’s tenth birthday with several titles and a movie that made up “The Compilation of Final Fantasy VII,” said fans assumed a modern remake of the original game was on the way. An E3 tech demo released in 2005 that re-created the game’s iconic opening sequence fanned the burning rumor, but it remained just that: A demo.

So faithful Final Fantasy VII fans (myself included) continue to wait for a remake… And they wait… And they wait…

Is it ever going to happen? Square-Enix has been waffling on the answer for a handful of years now, but it’s been suggested that the time is nigh due to Square-Enix’s financial woes.

Whenever Square-Enix feels like answering inquiries about a Final Fantasy VII with a negative, it cites different reasons: A high-def remake would be too difficult to put together, Square-Enix producer Yoshinori Kitase told Ultimania Magazine, and the original team that worked on Final Fantasy VII has since scattered to the winds.

But most of the excuses Square offers for staying away from a Final Fantasy VII remake are shaky, as Square-Enix isn’t shy about updating its classic Final Fantasy games to suit modern gaming technology, even if said tech isn’t at the absolute cutting edge of what’s available at the time. Final Fantasy I through Final Fantasy IV have been retooled and re-released for iOS, Nintendo DS, and the PSP, multiple times in some instances. Final Fantasy V and VI were re-released on the Game Boy Advance. This makes sense, as portable game systems are Japan’s number-one choice, hence the reason why Square-Enix took the ninth installment of its popular Dragon Quest series over to the Nintendo DS.

So why is Square-Enix holding out on Final Fantasy VII? Is the company bent on making the theoretical remake a big, beautiful project on the budgetary level of a whole new Final Fantasy project?

It’s probable that Square-Enix would want the grandest presentation possible for a reboot, and Sony would certainly want to be on the ground floor of the project, especially after losing Final Fantasy XIII exclusivity. Some fans speculate that the company has always been capable of making a Final Fantasy VII remake on the PlayStation 3 despite its claims to the contrary, and is in fact perpetually planning for one that will be revealed at the right moment. A Final Fantasy VII remake of any kind is almost guaranteed to be well-received, and now that Square-Enix needs a bit of a pick-me-up, we may well see one.

Will Square-Enix add its own exciting announcement on top of what already looks to be a very busy and memorable year? Fans of the PlayStation’s biggest RPG are hoping so. I’m hoping so. A Final Fantasy VII remake on any system would prove difficult to turn away from.

I don't want Square to touch the game. I remember it fondly, I don't want them remaking it and messing it up by 'improving' the battle system, weapon upgrades and character levelling to the crappy ones that they use in FFXIII.

Lucas has already ruined Star Wars for me by messing around with it, I don't want Square to ruin this.

If they aren't going to do FF7 anytime soon, then at least give us Xenogears/FF6 HD. These three comprise my favorite old school rpgs and I KNOW I'm not alone in that sentiment. Enough with the excuses, Square becomes less relevant to the video game scene every year. When are they gonna figure it out? And where the f*ck is KH3?

Don't forget Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. Both are great games for their respective systems when they came out. Though personally, in my perfect universe I would love to see Final Fantasy 6 remade into full 3D HD. Make the game as good if not better than the FMV sequences they added for the PS1 release.

FF13-2 sequel over trono chrogger and crap final fantasy 7 remake and crap versus.

lol no im just trolling; squares full of crap and I myself would love to see a final fantasy 7 remake. I just hope they dont decide to touch anything delicate if they decide to... I just wish in the mean time they'd get versus done and over with because thats a game I specifically bought my ps3 for.

If Square remade FFVII they would probably

-get rid of the turn based battle system and replace it with the 'sit-back-and-let-the-game-decide-what-actions-you-take' battle system of FFXIII
-replace materia with some stupid skill upgrade grid
-make GF's playable in battle instead of just having the awesome cutscene attacks that FFVII's GF's do (tell me the first time you used Ifrits attack in battle wasn't an AWESOME experience, now compare it to the lame attacks that GF's do in FFXIII)
-get rid of the ability to explore the world map at your own leisure and instead turn the game into a whole lot of short 'chapters' that you have to do in order with no option to deviate from the story AT ALL
-get rid of the Golden Saucer Casino, infact, get rid of all towns, shops and hotels along with all NPC's that you can talk to. While at it, remove all mini games and side quests.
-have save points every 3 minutes so you don't need to use tents (is it just me or are there a $hitload of save points in FFXIII compared to past games?)
-take away your ability to directly control the other members in your party, instead let the PS3 do it for you
-get rid of the humour and instead make the game more 'serious', because that's what the public wants
-get rid of the anime style characters for a more 'real' look, because that's what the public wants

FF VI & VII were the pinnacle of the series, hours of gameplay, crazy side quests, funny minigames, just great. VIII, IX and X was adequate (though the way that GF's were used in X wasn't the best). X-2, no, not good, we'll make believe that that one was never made. XII was good, good story and characters, but the series was starting to change for the worse IMO with this title. The battle system and the way that GF's were used was totally changed, but you still had the towns to visit and could pretty much go anywhere you wanted whenever you wanted so you could grind out experience and items, which is what the series has always been about, and even with the new battle system I still enjoyed playing this game.

Then came FF XIII........ The battle system was reworked yet again, leaving the player with even less control over his characters actions as well as the parties. GF's were turned into gay transformers (chicks that turned into a motorbike? Odin turns into a horsey? Really SquareSoft?) For some reason they thought that people who had played all of the previous Final Fantasies were probably sick of exploring the worlds created in the games, so they removed the ability to explore them and instead stuck you in an action game COD kind of story progression - you HAD to go where the game directed you, you had NO other options (this is true for a majority of the game, take away Grand Pulse and you would have nowhere to explore in the game). They also took away any cities or towns to explore, shops to visit, inns to stay at.

I fired up my FFXIII to play again because I thought I may have been a bit hard on it, but no, it is as bad as I remember. 2 hours in and this is how the game goes --
walk down linear path>save point>fight enemies>cutscene>progress to next stage down linear path>save point>fight enemies>cutscene>progress down linear path to next stage and so on and so on. This does not sound like how a FF game should progress, it sounds more like a Splinter Cell or COD game. Really the only reason for running down the paths in FFXIII was to move you to the next level of enemies, much like walking down a corridor in COD and entering a room full of bad guys.

These are my reasons why I don't want Square to touch my beloved FFVII

But on a good note, they would make it look pretty with good graphics.

And if anyone didn't get it the first time, I don't like FFXIII (but I'll still play FFXIII-2 when it's released cos I'm a RPG junkie)
