    Default Awful Loading Times

Relatively new to this and didn't see a thread with this kind of problem so here goes:

    Slim PS2
    SPCH 75004
    PAL

Had someone add the Memory Card softmods and ESR. Tried Wild Arms 3 and Shadow Hearts Covenant Undub. Both work without problems.

However some other games have difficulties loading and sometimes don't even boot at all. 2 games that have this problem
    Rogue Galaxy Undub
    FF 12 Zodiac

I've read the compatibility list and burned them with the required speed but didn't use Verbatim DVDs. Does having verbatim really make that much of a difference?

Also I'm using a component cable, don't know if it makes any difference either.

When trying to play Rogue Galaxy I can hear the ps2 struggling to read the disk and the in-game freezes many times due to not being able to load things on time. Haven't been able to boot FF12 Zodiac properly due to this.

Any info on this would be great because I've ruined many dvds already.

Save your DVDs and look into USB loading (OPL).

I know Rogue Galaxy works. I have burned on Memorex DVD-R. The same applies to FF XII!

Isn't USB loading even slower because of the 1.1 usb slot? I don't think its a good idea with these 2 games since they're loaded with FMV's and real-time rendering.

It works for me too like I mentioned. The loading is the problem here. Is there a patch or something for these occasions that Im missing?

What brand of DVD are you using? Make sure that the DVD's are DVD-R and not DVD+R. Usually a good brand of DVD-R should work fine (Verbatim, Sony...), but some consoles can be picky even among them. Avoid cheap brands at all costs.
Also, if you have the possibility to try an other dvd burner, in my experience laptop burners gave me almost always bad results.
If nothing mentioned above works you can try to carefully clean the lens of your PS2 with rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs. There are some good guides around the net that will show you how to do it. And if that does not help, your laser might be about to die or you might have to adjust it... but I wouldn't really recommend that if you are not experienced with stuff like that, since it can shorten it durability even further.
Otherwise I would recommend the SMB method over USB, if you have a router that is. Works better.

With the games that I play via USB, there isn't any slow downs as far as game play is concerned (that may depend on the drive being used as well). FMVs are still touch and go but you can always fast forward through all of that junk. LOL

I haven't been able to tinker with SMB loading but I've heard that it's better than USB.

I used TDK brand dvd-r to write the games. Is TDK considered a bad brand? Another related question: are taiyuu yuuden still in production of dvds? From previous experiences those were pretty high-quality as well...I'll try some verbatims when I have the chance to buy them.
I dont think there's a problem with the lens since we're talking about a newly aquired ps2 in mint condition with about 20-30hours of gameplay on it. And that SMB method looks quite tedious but if there's no other way i'll try that.

I like FMVs myself since its more or less a necessity in the genres I want to play. Gonna try USB method anyways.

    thanks for the feedback!

Well that is weird... Do you have any warranty on the console? Was the console in its package and protected from dust before you acquired it? How do original games play?
TDK should be ok, but your PS2 may not "like" them. Wouldn't know about Taiyo Yuuden since I never had the chance to buy them, but Verbatims that are made in Japan are made by them.
Yeah, SMB is a bit of a hassle... but I was surprised how well the FMVs run. I tested 50 Cent Bulletproof which is a dual layer game and Batman: Vengeance. Both intros run without stuttering. Still, its not perfect, some other games FMV do stutter and not all games work, but it definitely works better than USB.

I got it from a glass display at a shop. From the looks of it they kept it quite clean. After that I used an electric blower to clean any possible dust from the inside and nothing came out. The cd lends looks fine and primp as well. Is there a possibility that it might not actually be clean? To the eye it looks clean so I wouldn't know if there's something amiss.

I guess verbatim are my last choice now. Gonna get some next week probably and try again. Having suspicions about my dvd writer as well...

Are you using a laptop DVDwriter? They are known to give bad results. And what speed are you burning? Try a slow 1X or 2X speed
    PS1 PAL Backup Method: Modchip { Retired }
    PS2 PAL Backup Method: FMCB
PS3 PAL Backup Method: True Blue V 2.7, MM 4.18.00
PS3 PAL Backup Method: Rogero CFW 4.40 V1.03, MM 4.30.00
    Finally a new CFW

Its not really visible to the eye and even small amounts of dust on the lens can cause some problems, but if you say that it is unlikely then something else might be the problem.
I would still recommend you to try some different DVD brands first and if you can manage a different writer, just to make sure you're not doing anything unnecessary. Also, from what I've gathered JVC DVDs are made by Taiyo Yuden (or at least some of them - you can check the media ID on the packaging stating TYG02, made in Japan).
Should you give the cleaning a go be sure to check various guides and videos beforehand to see what you are supposed to do since it can also make things even worse if you're not careful. It worked for my fat PS2 years ago (about 4 or 5 I guess) and its still going strong.
