I used to be a Street Fighter kind of guy, but my recent craze has definitely been the Guilty Gear X2 stuff--more recently up to the Accent Core version. The concept of juggling an enemy in the air right after dusting them and trying for a long string of combos before they hit the ground is impressive, flashy--and either effective or useless. Regardless, the quirkiness and purely Japanese-inspired designs might turn off a certain crowd, but the jamming rock music and rock references should attracted a crowd not entirely sold on anime, but looking for something definitely different. Plus, each character has a certain specialty of powers that is sure to appeal to just about anyone.

My gut tells me (that without reading the entire thread) nobody has mentioned Marvel Nemesis

Clearly one of the most underrated games of all time. People cited crappy graphics along with simplistic gameplay but it was like PowerStone and got more complex if you knew how to juggle but was easy to get into.

Killer Instinct Arcade (Damn them for not releasing it in 64 'cause KI Gold sucks noodles), or Street Fighter Alpha 3.

Well if we're talking super fast paced, frantic fighters, then Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus is right up there

Tecnnically speaking, Street Fighter 3: third strike was pretty amazing for its time with its parry system, and hell, every1 remembers that comeback moment that happened at Evo because of this game.
