You have to realize that you're going to step in a lot of controversy just by making a game about graffiti. You can do it without a huge amount of fuss, but it better be light hearted and cartoony, like Jet Grint/Set Radio back on the Dreamcast. When clothing designer Marc Ecko set out to making Getting Up though, he wanted to actually show the tagging subculture, as real and gritty as he could make it. The fact that an outsider was this vocal about eating everyone else's lunch made waves too, Ecko's frank speech at DICE got a ton of play. If he wanted buzz, he got it.
Next came the job of credibility. This was also easy. The voice cast is huge—recording artist Talib Kweli voices the main character, and you'll also hear from Giovanni Ribisi, Brittany Murphy, Andy ****, Adam West, Charlie Murphy, and the RZA. Diverse doesn't even begin to cover it. The game also features cameos and voice work from some of graffiti's biggest... erm... stars?
Then the mainstream press caught wind of it. New York mayor Bloomberg publicly railed against the game on the grounds it will glamorize graffiti. The game has since been banned in Australia. Being banned is of course the best thing that can happen to a game, since now EVERYONE will want to play it.
After the firestorms, the controversy, the posturing, and all the blurbs fade away though, there's a game here. While BS may sell games, it certainly won't make them good. So let's take a look through the BS and see what the game is all about.
