Sony May Quickly Drop PS Vita Price After Launch

The Sony PS Vita is set to launch at a premium price when it ships in the U.S. and U.K. in February 2012. Based on the sales trends in Japan though, it may make sense for them to quickly drop the price shortly after launch.

The Sony PS Vita will come in two varieties when it releases this coming February.

The Wi-Fi only version will ship with a price tag of $250, while the 3G enabled version will come with a price tag of $300.

The Sony PS Vita launched in Japan roughly 10-days ago, and initially had some fantastic sales, raking in sales of over 300,000 units in just the first two days.

That may seem great for Sony, but after that, it only managed to sell another 72,000 units over the course of the rest of the launch week.

What this shows is that the hardcore, early-adopters were eager to pick up the console on launch day. Beyond that core group though, the interest to pick up the Sony PS Vita was simply not there at that price point.

The original Sony PSP even outsold the Sony PS Vita over that same one-week period leading up to Christmas.

This could mean that Sony may quickly drop the price of the Sony PS Vita, likely 2 or 3 months after it launches in the U.S.

The price drop would likely come at E3 2011, which would gear up the Sony PS Vita to be a more mainstream handheld heading into the next holiday shopping season.

Nintendo had to make a similar move with the Nintendo 3DS when the handheld failed to sell at its initial $270 price point, and Sony will most likely follow-suit with a similar pattern.

It just does not appear the mainstream interest is there for a dedicated gaming handheld at that price point, especially with competition such as the Apple iPad, and iPhone

I saw this coming. Hopefully the device will do better, just like the 3DS did after it's price dropped.

selling two diff kinds is stupid especially with only a 50 price break. and where the 4g? wifi and 3g only? wtf are we in 2011 or 2005 here...

Ill get it if it can be hacked and play more video formats than psp. regular psp not playing .avi files was just silly.

some of the games look cool that is reason i want one but i am in no hurry to get it i just get my money in march is why i picked that date

wow you seem rather commited at least lol most the saints fans i know just kinda hopped on the bandwagon when brees came along. I am panthers fan so its been a rough last few years but things finally looking up. Wasnt really trying to ruffle ya feathers just its kinda weird seeing another NFCS guy here when you can see people all over the world posting guess just a small world eh. anyhow we play saints tomorrow had just read a breakdown of the game (saints favored by 8.5 :eviltongue and then came here and read a post by a saints guy lol seemed ironic and was already on my mind thus the response.

But back on topic, id like a Vita but im hold off and and see its real multimedia aspects. Got 2 psps and even hacked the amount of media players and stuff was a turn off i want a my mobile device to do more than just play games and stuff maybe i picky though.

Not crazy about them using new memory cards either as i got a good bit of mem stick duos sd cards micosd etc laying around too but thats sony why let you use something you have already when they can sell ya something instead.

Hey maybe now I'll actually buy it!

I'll buy it second hand once it has a CFW for it.

Might buy it for 180 dollars maybe used in good conditions
