Sony justifies Vita memory card pricing with the mantra of 'security'

Sony's virtually synonymous with needlessly expensive proprietary memory, and this time it's justifying the cost by claiming that the PlayStation Vita's new memory format is more secure — that is, more secure for Sony. Sony Division 2 software development boss Muneki Shimada told AV Watch that the company required a format with "guaranteed performance," since read / write speeds vary among third-party cards, and also that Sony needed to "ensure the security" of the platform. In this case, security measures include forcing users to go through an intermediary program to manage stored data instead of allowing the Vita's memory card to be used as a mass storage device with PCs.

While we've seen other platforms get bitten by inconsistent card performance — most notably with Windows Phone 7's microSD debacle — neither of Sony's concerns make the final price tag easier to swallow, and it's clear that it simply wants to create a new locked-down memory format that can't be used as easily for piracy. Shimada also says that the company has no interest in packaging memory "freebies" with the device as smartphone manufacturers often do — which makes sense, considering there's nothing "free" about Sony's memory.

sad just sad I've always loved their gaming products but someone needs to be fired for some of the prices they come out with. Last time I checked the economy is still **** and they want an arm and a leg for a damn memory card that can't be used by or for anything else.

The price is okay, it's just Vita's sh!t.
I don't need a portable device to play remakes and PS3 games - I have emulators(for old consoles), and all current(incl.PS3x2)/last gen consoles to play what they're "remaking".
Yeah, remakes will have 1-2 new features, but I don't give a f*ck.

im still gonna get a psvita they come with 2gb cards and like everything else the chinese will sell copys of the memory cards on ebay for much much less but do the same job and once the psvita gets cracked the prices will fall further..

it was the same situation with the first psps..i bought one on launch day from japan and the memory sticks cost more than the games did and the psp i bought only came with a very very small 8mb card free which was ok for game saves but you couldnt play movies or mp3s so you hadf tyo buy another one atleast the psvita comes with a good sized card to start with ...you will only need bigger cards once they crak it like they did with the psp i now have a 32gb card in my psp that has loads of games on it and is brilliant for long haul flights.

but the reason im buying psvita is to play the new uncharted game which looks a hundred times better than uncharted 3 itll also be cool to play ps3 games sent wirelessly to the psvita like the wiiu..

only thing im gonna do though is not buy the psvita on launch day ill see what bundles come out weeks later ..i cant see any store selling these at full rrp without some kind of freebie such as a game or movie chucked in.

Its more security for them at the cost of making consumers bend over. Why should we be the ones being "punished" .... I call BS.

I dont think the issue is about sony using proprietary cards anymore. its more about the ridiculous prices.
