Thread: Swap between different PS3 firmware (CFW, OFW, or MFW) — without hardware

Shaitan, from psx-scene, has written up a tutorial on how to swap between different PS3 firmware, without the need of expensive USB devices. According to Shaitan, you can swap between custom firmware, official firmware, and modified firmware. The setup shouldn’t take more than 3 minutes.

Hi guys, I’m always looking for ways to make my PS3 experience easier so this was awesome. It’s nothing special but I’m constantly needing to change firmwares like many of you so I thought I’d share it. To do this it’s best to use QA Flag Extra since most firmwares cant enable “System Update Debug”.

Here's the tutorial:

1.Enable QA Flag Extra and go to the debug settings and enable “System Update Debug”

2.Then use Multiman’s file manager(or other) and create a folder in /dev_hdd0 called “updater”, so it’s /dev_hdd0/updater/

3.Then create folders in that directory for the firmwares called 01, 02, 03, ect.(Dont miss a number or it will error).

4.Now copy whichever PS3UPDAT.PUP into one of those folders and…

5.Rename it to whatever you want, you dont even need the .PUP at the end.

6.Now go to System Update then Update via Hard Disk


And the result shoul look like in the picture above. Btw I thought to post it here since it's new, mods you can move if you see it fit.

PS. This doesn't work for OFW3.56+, only for OFW3.55.

It isn't really switching between them if you need to install the cfw lol. I guess it can be quite useful though, now people can go buy a Cobra dongle and a True blue dongle

It's a nice feature, sadly you can't use it to switch between CFW and 3.6+ OFW (you can't downgrade). You should probably add a BIG RED WARNING saying that b4 the n00b flood

Lol when i first read this i thought it was for Dual Booting CFW (3.55) and OFW (4.00) , because of the "— without the need of expensiv" , which i guess means without e3 flasher :p
