Thread: My external HDD wont turn on

Hi there,
I have bought a Samsung ext HDD in July and it seems to be already dead. It wont turn on. The fact is that I have lots of pirate games and xxx in it, is it safe to send it to customers´support?

you should have made a backup. if it's regular xxx you shouldn't have to worry.
but if it's JB or CP they are required by law to call the police. if it won't turn on you could try taking the drive out and putting it in another caddy.

just regular xxx and leaked pics from celebs.. :D
but because of piracy, I dont need to worry, right? Do they keep the HDD or will they return to me?

More than likely they'll just send you a new drive. Just about any place you take it to will tell you that they'll erase the drive. Even if they just replaced the part, chances are they'd re-format and reburn just to test.
I'm a tech and from personal experience I can tell you that if they do see your xxx then (as long as it's not CP) the worst that could happen is they'd copy it for themselves.
As far as the games though, that's another story. Being that it is technically not even legal to make your own personal backups (Let's not hijack the thread with our personal opinions about this.) then you have a chance of being turned in.
When you say it won't turn on, what do you mean?
Is there no power whatsoever or does it just not recognize?
Have you tried another power supply? (make sure the voltage/amperage are the same)
In any case, most of the guys I've ever worked with aren't d1cks and would just ignore it. And again, there is a very very good chance they won't even look at it before formatting.

it depends on the repair place. if it's just a small computer shop you may get the data back. but if you send it to the company it will be wiped.

now, there is a simple way
make a magnet sandwich
which means put ur hdd in between two big magnet bars and rub
First-in clockwise and another in anti-clockwise direction
and the data is erased from the hdd

he wants to keep the data.
and with modern drives it's very hard to get a magnet close enough to do anything.

Especially an external..They're made to be resistant to electromagnetic force.

the drives are the same. external ones are just wedged in a case.
