Default Laptop hangs and becomes unresponsive

I'm running Windows 7 64 with 4Gb ram and have noticed that at random times my laptop seems to lag almost like something is using up all of its resources.

I've checked running processes to try and identify what the problem is. It seems to happen when I am surfing the web and when it starts it does it on all 3 browsers. (Chrome, Firefox and IE) also any other programs also become unresponsive.

A reboot seems to ix the problem for a few hours and then it does it again.

I've updated Java, drivers and everything else that I can think of doing, does anyone have any idea how I can try and track down what is causing the problem? I've even gone ahead and disabled my AV software just in case there was a conflict.

    Help

Well check the process and see which one is taking up all the memory.

Do u think it is a virus. I would have to see for myself but I cant. With 4gb of memory, there shouldnt be a problem. Its probably overheating.

what about cpu time? have you checked that?
also chrome is becoming more bloated so I prefer to stick with firefox.

I formatted not too long ago and cleaned a bunch of junk of the computer. I did install a few non legit programs so I guess a virus is possible even with AV running.

I'll keep watching the temp, I never thought about that one.

I've also checked the CPU time

It's just kind of puzzling, I know it sounds noobish but I wonder if there is really such a thing as a bad format.

the AV may be the problem. just use windows update as it has a malicious software removal tool built in.

Try running them (firefox etc) without add-ons and see how they perform.....also check to see how many programs you have running in your background and turn off any that's not needed....
If you use someones post in anyway that benefits you and you don't at least say thank you it's like a slap in the face.....I say this to tell you all give credit where it is due! If you don't know how, learn how to +rep or say thanks and stop lurking in the shadows.

I had a similar issue, but it wasn't a virus. In fact, there was a conflict with Java, Flash, and the video drivers. I had to go into msconfig and stop the services for the video drivers (it loads them as needed), and this seem to clear the issue. Actually, I did a clean boot, where I stopped all but the Microsoft stuff. Give the "clean boot" a try.
