so i ripped a dvd by just dragging and dropping the files off the dvd(vob & ifo files etc) so I could convert it to iso but it does not open correctly with vlc. can someone give me direction. I dont have the original dvd anymore...

Use something like Nero Burning Rom, it'll allow you to select "dvd video" (Or something like that) and you can drop all of your files into the folder named "TS VIDEO" (ts audio should be empty.) And then burn it to disk or to iso.

That is because you did not decrypt the files.
You can not just drag and drop and expect things to work properly.
You need to use something like DVD Decrypter or CloneDVD2 (combined with AnyDVD) to properly rip files from DVD so they are usable.
Even if you do burn those files you have back to dvd chances are it won't work.
