playin .avi files..
ok here's the lowdown:
i have cccp installed.(closed community codec pak).
i have files labeled,"video clip", and they play fine.
i download a .avi file, fully assuming it should play, but it isnt.
what happens is: when i try to play, the VERY beginning starts, then it says i have to install a new codec. so it tells my browser to re-direct me to a website. first time it did that, i downloaded the codec, and installer. (wasnt sure if i shouldve installed it, as i thought it would conflict w/ cccp) and an expired version of avg said it was a trojan. but my other anti-virus didnt get anything.
so i deleted the .avi file. i downloaded another copy of the movie, and windows media player did the same thing, but my net connection was sucking and i couldnt see the site it was giving me. anywayz,, what do i do?

I'd suggest you try to not use codex packages.
They can mess up your system because they force the computer/program to run something it really isn't made to.
For almost all of my videos I use VLC Media Player.
It's free and it opens pretty much everything.

Windows Media Player is ok, but I rarely use it unless it's for music...and even then not so much.

k-lite should NEVER be used.
If you can find one that isn't infected with a nasty present all the codecs in it are cheap outdated ripoffs of the real thing and often can damage your PC.
If you must install a codec pack use CCCP, or install only the codecs you need.
You can get by just fine with only installing the DivX and xVId codecs.

CCCP is the best codec packages but only should be installed if you know what you're doing. However it is pretty basic it comes with Media Player Classic but seriously if you don't know how to configure your codecs then VLC is the way to go. Although it sucks balls when playing MKV files.
