Free Mcboot is definitely the way to go, you can patch backups with ESR and burn them to a disc and play them, or use Open PS2 Loader to play them off a USB storage device or your computer network, and you can still play original games.
Here's the tutorial in case you haven't already found it.http://bootleg.sksapps.com/tutorials/fmcb/
Most of the ways to install it require you to buy something which is kind of a waste to pay $20 or more for something you'll probably only use once. Of course the best way to install it is to know someone who already has it on there memory card. If you don't know anyone and don't own any of the devices you need you can send it to volunteers to install it for you for the cost of postage. Or you can use the game swap method, see the tutorial, it's pretty easy to do on a slim. You have to open your PS2 and tape down a sensor that's a little button and block another one on top so you can play games with the lid open, you can find tutorials for this on You Tube. Then buy one of the games at Game Stop and return it later or sometimes you can find them on Amazon for $0.01 plus S+H.

Looks like there's a few on You Tube but they don't seem very good, do you want to use Memor32 to run backups or to install Free Mcboot?
