Install Free Mcboot on your memory card. Here's a link to the tutorial. http://bootleg.sksapps.com/tutorials/fmcb/
You can buy a PS3 memory card adapter and plug it in to your computer and use it to install Free Mcoot. Here's the program you need, open the readme file for instructions.
    Code:

If you don't want to do that, look at the installation portion of the tutorial for other methods, most of them involve buying stuff. For the game swap method on a slim PS2 you have to open your PS2 and block a sensor, you can find tutorials for this on You Tube or Google.
To play PSX games you'll need any original PSX disc and the PSX launcher program to swap it for a burned PSX game. If you can though I'd highly recommend using an emulator on your computer to play PSX games. There is a PSX emulator for the PS2 but I've heard it doesn't play any sound. If you do want to use the PSX launcher let me know and I'll tell you how to install and use it, it only works on SCPH 5000x and up.
As for installing Linux, a Google search turns up several tutorials.

This may be a noob question but i have fmcb installed and i backed up my copy of persona 3 fes just to try it and see if it worked. I go to esr and it launched an esr gui with a white background then i clicked launch cdvd and it didn't load. Am i doing something wrong? I patched it with the esr disc patcher v0.24a then burned at 8x speed with imgburn . Is there more you have to do when you install fmcb? I used the noobie package if that makes any difference. Should i go buy more discs and just waste them in this manner or did i do it right the first time?

I've backed up persona 3 4 times now and wasted 9 discs could someone please help

jesus only thing that was wrong was that i had a usb stick in the ps2 once i removed it all the games worked perfect
