Post NEWS on Stop Online Piracy Act! Close ps3iso?

First off I love ps3iso, but can't say the same for every one! so here's the scoop:

The judiciary committee and its chairman Lamar Smith have revealed the 120 formal supporters of the draconian bill that will mark the end of free Internet, putting the U.S. in the illustrious group that includes North Korea, Iran and China.SOPA was proposed earlier this year. SOPA is the first of two bills being considered by Congress. The second is E-PARASITE/Protect-IP. The bills are created to prevent piracy, copyright infringement, and block access to "rogue foreign sites." The bills have been generally panned by the public and the major tech companies due to the fact that companies can get domains and websites shut down if they "engage in, enable or facilitate infringement" or are even accused of it. By creating this blacklist, governments and companies can choose to get sites cut off from search engines and from accepting payments for ads. SOPA only gives accused websites 5 days to file an appeal before they get shut down. If a user posts pirated material in the comments or forum section, the entire site can be shut down for good. Additionally, the legislation gives the attorney general the power to change DNS entries, blocking users from visiting infringing sites. While the list is not surprising in the least, there are a few strange entries in there, including GoDaddy, Tiffany Co (jewelry maker), L'Oreal (cosmetics maker) and BeachBody LLC (the team behind the P90X workouts). Regardless, you can't go wrong with boycotting all the following companies, and moving your domains from GoDaddy.

Its true. Its not news because the bill doesn't exist yet. Its just a "could" happen scenario. I suppose you could argue that since they're trying to turn it into a bill that the mere act of trying is news. News is something that cannot be changed, it's already happened. But since something like this could be open for general discussion, it probably belongs in the general section. Furthermore, piracy act couldn't really shut down anything because of our DMCA laws. If we own it,we have the legal right to have a backup of it. Maybe I own Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom for my Wii, but my disc drive broke. So at this point, not only can I NOT play it, but with my lack of furthered warranty, I cannot fix it and, subsequently, cannot back up the game. I have every right as an American to download a copy of that to have and load via USB Loader GX.

simple solution: don't vote for the politicians who support SOPA at the next election. and, boycott every corporate supporter as well.

Anyone who flames you for posting news in the news section is just that; a flamer.

News is defined as information about something that has recently happened, which this is. Any extra information is news and should be posted in the NEWS section as it's news and affects all of us. Given it's importance, there should be a sticky with current info about it IMO.

You can only download a backup of something if you didn't share copy righted material without permission or circumvent security measures to back it up and/or play it back. IE PS3 encryption, Serial code authentication, Copy-right protected music, etc... It IS perfectly legal otherwise. Torrents are an excellent example. Those monitoring downloads have to send and receive packets from the offender to actually detect downloading, an unavoidable consequence of being connected to the torrent swarm. That's typically how downloaders are actually identified. Though works may not be encrypted, if they are restricted by copy right, then shared, you have violated the law. Granted this doesn't apply to all downloads,(direct downloads are usually easy to get away with, as is authorized backup material) but with regards to illicit torrenting, thats how its done. SOPA represents the administration of a new wave of psuedo-gestapo tactics designed to control something that has clearly escalated beyond corporate control. One way or another, this type of legislation is inevitable. The real issue is how they determine and administer corrective action. Copy-right law doesn't exist everywhere, and often varies from country to country. I think that any legislation with a real hope of passing will have to include a structured review committee designed to oversee each allegation on a case-by-case basis.
