Anonymous releases private police information in name of Occupy Wall Street

Anonymous, a hacker collective that has aligned itself with the Occupy Wall Street protests, leaked information it stole from four police and government websites today.

More than 600 MB of data from the International Association of Chief of Police, or IACP, (website still down) was released, according to a press release from Anonymous. It included internal documents, membership rosters, home addresses, passwords, social security numbers and more.

Along with the IACP data, Anonymous revealed 1000 names and passwords from the Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association; 1000 names, ranks, social security numbers, addresses, phone numbers from the Alabama law enforcement systems; and the full contact database Matrix Group, a web development agency serving government websites.

Anonymous said it wanted to attack the police directly because they act as a protector of “the one percent,” or what OWS protesters describe as the fortunate few who hold the majority of the wealth that would otherwise benefit the remaining “99 percent.” Anonymous has attacked police in the past in an effort to expose corruption and brutality. The hack actually falls on the International Day of Action Against Police Brutality.

“We have no problem targeting police and releasing their information even if it puts them at risk because we want them to experience just a taste of the brutality and misery they serve us on an everyday basis,” reads the press release.

Today’s action is just one day before IACP’s annual conference, though the press release from Anonymous is dated Oct. 22 and says the drop was to come day one of the conference. Perhaps it was leaked.

Of the Matrix Group, Anonymous wrote, “We intentionally excluded the unions and other unrelated sites on their servers because, unlike the police and those who support them, we will never betray our working class comrades.”

In the video below, you can hear a hacker call the Baldwin country sheriff’s office to say “your website has been defaced,” and admit to the hack. The conversation was uploaded to YouTube. The call, made over Skype, comes from a British man who claims he hacked the website because he was bored, which goes against the wording of Anonymous’ press release. Yet another example of how the collective is relatively disjointed.

Ya, really stepping over the line here. Police are there to protect us and should be shown more respect than this.

Want to release private information--pick on lawyers and bankers, no one likes those guys!! :D

Idiots.......the police have nothing to do with protecting the "1%". Do they not realize that police officers are middle class????? They are just doing their jobs......a job I challenge any of those P.O.S. Anonymous members to ever try for a day. They are doing nothing to help ANYONE......kindly %$#@ off.........

Yeah I took a third stance a long time ago. On one hand they could be protesting for great things, but I don't even think they understand what it is they are even protesting for. Most are just protesting because "they have more money than me!". Nobody is really being honest, they want more cash, but money makes you evil so if you are rich, you are really the devil. And I learned that is not the exact case because I know some wealthy people who got that way from being frugal, they just worked their whole life and they saved what they had and didn't blow it and they have helped me and my grandmother on more than one occasion. The protestors that support Ron paul know what they are talking about but they often get lumped in with the rest that are protesting about "he has more money than me!" Their the crowd that believes that "what is mine is not yours, but what is yours is mine". But the bankers have really been screwing us over and many large corporations rarely pay much in taxes while smaller businesses get punished and those that want to enter into a market face many legal barriers. And many confuse this with capitalism which it is not. Capitalism is the idea that one can buy things and keep it and sell things they already own. Meaning you can buy an ipod and it becomes yours or you can sell that ipod to your friend and it becomes his. What we have is corporatism mixed in with capitalism. It is twisted and only corporations truly benefit. Signs of this can be seen in patents and copyright. When there was an aids breakout in africa, the government there allowed generic companies to develop the medicine because the patent holders were charging outrageous amounts for it and they sued africa because their cash cow would die in the country. They didn't care that they were charging out of the butt for it there and many were dying. It was all about the money $$$. A lot of pharmaceutical companies will actually stop selling medicine when their patent ends because they can't make gobs of cash with it and there is more competition with generic medicines.

There is a large problem that ows could protest, but the majority are just protesting for free stuff basically. The left is too worried about "he has more money than me!" and the right is too worried about "their trying to take my money" and "gay people are getting married!". And both just want to "let's go start some more wars!" and "who cares it's not our money we're wasting!"
