The Next portable console: what should its Specs be?
Here is what i think the next future console should have(remember this can be whatever you want):
1: Flexible LED ,fold-out multi-touchscreen(so that the screens would be joint with no gap, multitouch could mean you'd be able to use both hands on the screen for zooming and other things, and brighter because no current console can be viewed properly in strong sunlight which makes them alot less portable).
2: 1Ghz dual core processors(so the consoles have enough power to do full internet and run dual applications)
3: Bigger Brighter flexible screens (The LED fold-out screen would allow the console to have a massive screen and they should give it a really high resoloution like 1024x600 so again youd have full internet screensize and amazing definition in games
4: Better Graphics cards, with resolution rescalling with fullscreen anti-alaising(so not only can you output to your tv but you can output in the same definition as your tv with no pixelation or other glitches.
5: 1GB RAM (Apllications would be able to reach new hieghts, games would be able to cache more data and so run faster, you could run about 10 apps at the same time with no lag, itd be like a portable pc, and finally you could emulate just about anything with these specs.
6: Bigger battery(maybe a 3000mah li-polly battery as they can be recharged like 10,000 times when compared to li-ion which is about 400-800 depending on the hardware its powering and the 3000 mah would insure it runs long, it would need it especially with all these specs)
7: SOFTWARE: Let people Commercially buy programs for there consoles so they can do there graphics designing, and pdf making anywhere
8: Better sound(it would be nice to have a portable console that you didnt have to plug earphones into to hear, i mean most speakers have really tinny sound with a really low volume and really diminishes the playability of games like Elite beat agents without earphones.)
9: Better storage media, The DS's Carts can only store a max of 256mb(128mb currently), and its just not enough, the psp's discs are slow for loading times in some games, and pretty noisy although they have got high storage at upto 1.8GB, A quieter and faster disc media would be the way forward as the extra ram would decrease load times also.
10: Built in DAB, FM, AM, FREEVIEW and Analogue tuner: well maybe not all of them but definetly DAB, and FREEVIEW as this would give the console a whole new purpose it would really be a multi-media device then
11: EXE execution, if it walks, talks and acts like a pc Make it a PC allow poeple to install a Optimized version of Vista and give them full abilities like being able to run any applications which would require EXE execution.
12: A Slide-out keyboard it would be needed to use this Beast properly.
13: Built in camera (simply so it doesnt stick out, and possibly the same with GPS).
EDIT: I just Realised that i pretty much defined a UMPC(Ultra Mobile Personal Computer) oh well :-[
The only things missing are the fold-over LED screen, and the games but obv you could run windows games

Re: The Next portable console: what should its Specs be?
You kidding? If this is a fantasy (which it IS, we're not going to get a portable console with those sort of specs other than a umpc) then why not go for the works?
LED touchscreen, size 16cm x9cm (I know people are gonna say I'm not being creative, nicking the ratio of a lot of screens today but it is a nice size and is widescreen)
3ghz quad core CPUs
Bigger Brighter flexible screens with full HD 1920x1080 (Woah, HD in a 16x9cm screen?????)
8gb ddr4 ram
Bigger battery
Extreme quality internal speakers with crystal clear headphones that are wireless and you can pick whether you want to use them over the speakers or not
Every memory card support with internal solid state hdd of 64gb (yes it is possible, even today, though maybe not crammed into such a small space)
Built in HD with over 2000 channels (I'm guessing maybe that's the total number of channels in the world? IDK) with DAB, and AM/FM/Analogue
PS2, GC, Xbox/X360, PSP, NDS etc etc emulation (I know, but this is a fantasy
) that has UMD, NDS SD ports and allows isos/other unique rom types on the hdd
Slide out keyboard, but rather another slide out led touch screen which defaults to an onscreen keyboard (useful for DS emulation)
Built in 5MP camera with iR mode (for taking pics in the dark) with full 3D GPS
I thinkany company could go broke after manufacturing 100 of these.

Re: The Next portable console: what should its Specs be?
I wonder what 1920x1080 would look like on a 16x9cm screen, but yeah full 3d gps would be amazing, and you know we have both forgotten one thing they need to be really robust like so you could throw them from a 50 story building and it doesnt even get a dent, cos the ds lites out right now can be broken simply by just tugging back on the top screen honestly if your too rough they just snap right off, and psp screen's are terrible for scratches mines had tonnes of little hairline scratches all over the place.

Re: The Next portable console: what should its Specs be?
Lol good point.
Maybe for materials they should be made out of a polycarbonate material (??? whatever that is) like the playgear pocket has.
I dropped my psp by accident about 1m and there was barely even a sound in the pgp!

Re: The Next portable console: what should its Specs be?
a game console that can be able to use p/c components. :D

Re: The Next portable console: what should its Specs be?
what did you drop the Playgear pocket or the PSP, i think that Apple make there portables out of polycarbonate

Re: The Next portable console: what should its Specs be?
Both of course, my psp was in my pgp when my sister poked me in the back and I dropped it.
No embarassment here, it hurt
Actually screw all this, all we need is a UMPC that has the best specs in the world, e.g. Core 2 (Yorkfield)(not released yet but we're talking next gen!) 8gb ram etc etc. You'd be able to run pcsx2 for ps2 and no$gba for nds pretty decently on that rig so all we need then is native psp support and a card reader. :o :o I can't wait til something like that comes out :o

Re: The Next portable console: what should its Specs be?
i dont think emulators will advance to full PS2/XBOX/GAMECUBE/PSP/DS emulation for at least a few years yet

Re: The Next portable console: what should its Specs be?
I think you are not so up-to-date in ps2 emulation. If you have a good pc (the "ideal" specs we've discussed is MUCH more than enough) you can run ps2 games at full speed.
DS emulation is already been full speed even for pcs which aren't the best of the pack, for about 6 months).
And for PSP I mean native psp support, no need to emulate. Besides, I didn't ask for all the consoles you listed to be emulated only the nds, ps2 with the psp running natively. And if the emulators were commercially dev'd by whoever decides to make a top of the end umpc then it could be full speed.

Big bright screen, good graphics and with new ways to interact with games, like a DS's stylus only better ^__^
